Retainers

A retainer is a custom-made oral device that helps keep teeth in their correct position. Retainers can be removable or fixed. Removable retainers are worn for a certain number of hours each day and must be removed for eating and brushing teeth. Fixed retainers are cemented to the teeth and are not removable. Most people wear retainers for 12-15 hours per day during the initial period of tooth alignment, then gradually reduce the amount of time the retainer is worn until it is only worn at night.
