General Questions
Why should I choose Kumra Orthodontics?
Kumra Orthodontics combines board-certified expertise with a warm, patient-centered approach. With over 500 five-star reviews, two convenient locations, and the latest technology, we’re committed to creating beautiful smiles and positive experiences for patients of all ages.
What age should my child first see an orthodontist?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends children have their first orthodontic evaluation by age 7. At this age, enough permanent teeth have erupted to identify potential issues. Early evaluation doesn’t always mean early treatment—it means we can monitor development and intervene at the optimal time.
Do you treat adults?
Absolutely! About 1 in 4 orthodontic patients today are adults. We offer discreet treatment options like Invisalign and ceramic braces that work well for professional adults. It’s never too late for the smile you deserve!
What are your office hours?
Both our DC and Stafford offices are open Monday through Thursday 8am-5pm and Friday 8am-3pm. We’re closed on weekends. We also offer early morning and lunch appointments to accommodate busy schedules.
Treatment Questions
How long does orthodontic treatment take?
Treatment time varies based on your specific case. Simple cases may take 6-12 months, while more complex cases can take 18-24 months. During your complimentary consultation, we’ll provide a personalized estimate based on your needs.
Is orthodontic treatment painful?
Most patients experience some discomfort for a few days after getting braces or starting Invisalign, and after adjustments. This is normal and usually manageable with over-the-counter pain relievers. Most patients find the discomfort much less than they expected!
What's the difference between braces and Invisalign?
Braces use metal or ceramic brackets bonded to your teeth, connected by wires. Invisalign uses a series of clear, removable aligners. Both can achieve excellent results. The best choice depends on your specific case, lifestyle, and preferences—we’ll help you decide during your consultation.
How often will I need appointments?
For braces, you’ll typically visit every 4-8 weeks for adjustments. For Invisalign, appointments are usually every 6-10 weeks. We also offer virtual check-ins for certain patients to reduce office visits.
Can I still play sports with braces?
Yes! We recommend wearing a mouthguard during contact sports. We can provide an orthodontic mouthguard designed to protect both your braces and your smile.
Cost & Insurance Questions
How much does orthodontic treatment cost?
Cost varies based on the type and complexity of treatment. During your complimentary consultation, we’ll provide a detailed cost estimate. We work with most insurance plans and offer flexible payment options to make treatment affordable.
Do you accept insurance?
Yes! We accept most major dental and orthodontic insurance plans. We’ll verify your benefits before your first visit and handle all insurance paperwork for you.
Do you offer payment plans?
Absolutely! We offer in-house payment plans with no credit check, interest-free financing for qualified patients, and accept HSA/FSA accounts and CareCredit. We’re committed to making treatment affordable for every budget.
Is the consultation really complimentary?
Yes! Your initial consultation is completely complimentary with no obligation. During this visit, we’ll examine your teeth, discuss your goals, and provide treatment recommendations and cost estimates.
Care & Maintenance Questions
What foods should I avoid with braces?
Avoid hard, sticky, and chewy foods that can damage braces. This includes popcorn, hard candy, gum, ice, and biting into hard foods like apples or corn on the cob. We’ll provide a complete list at your bonding appointment.
How do I clean my teeth with braces?
Brush after every meal, using a soft-bristled brush and fluoride toothpaste. Use interdental brushes or floss threaders to clean between brackets and under wires. We’ll teach you proper techniques and provide tools at your appointments.
How long do I need to wear my retainer?
Ideally, you should wear your retainer for life! Initially, you’ll wear it full-time (20-22 hours/day), then transition to nights only. Long-term, most patients wear retainers a few nights per week to maintain their results.
What if I break a bracket or wire?
Call our office right away. We can often see you the same day or next day for repairs. In the meantime, if a wire is poking, you can use orthodontic wax to cover it or carefully clip it with nail clippers.
