Retainers

Retainers are custom-made devices you wear in your mouth over your teeth. They help keep your teeth in their new position and help prevent them from moving back to their original alignment. Retainers can be made from a variety of materials, including metal, plastic, or acrylic. Most orthodontists will recommend that you wear your retainer for at least 12 hours per day, and preferably overnight. It's important to follow your orthodontist's instructions for wearing and caring for your retainer, as improper use can damage the device or cause it to lose its effectiveness.
