Kumra Ortho offers effective treatment for TMJ, TMD, Headaches, Bite and Alignment Problems.
TMJ refers to the temporomandibular joint, which connects the jaw bone to the skull’s temporal bone. This joint is necessary for the jaw to move for chewing, yawning, talking, etc. Sometimes problems can occur with this hinge joint, called TMJ disorder. TMJ-TMD treatment includes a wide range of disorders that often overlap. They include:
- Muscle problems that affect jaw movement
- Pain in the face around the jaw joint
- Problems within the joint itself
This variety makes diagnosis and treatment challenging. An accurate diagnosis is critical for successful treatment. For instance, patients with a muscle problem that is causing pain will most likely not benefit from surgery on the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Dr. Kumra will go over all options in diagnosing and treating TMJ -TMD and facial pain.
What is TMJ Disorder or TMD?
There are several ways that TMJ disorder (TMD) can come about. A very common cause is regularly grinding the teeth or clenching them together tightly, a condition that often becomes much more intense during sleep. This is called Bruxism and results in many uncomfortable and painful side effects, such as headaches, stress, facial strain and poor sleep. Additional causes of TMD include bad posture leading to neck strain, and even one’s diet can cause TMD.
Symptoms of TMJ Disorder
Symptoms of a TMJ disorder include:
- Clicking or popping in the jaw when chewing or opening mouth wide
- Pain throughout the face
- Headaches, including migraines
- Discomfort in the jaw and neck
- Stiff facial muscles
- Restricted movement of the jaw

- Changes in bite and how the teeth fit together
Many people get TMD without ever having braces. If you are experiencing any of the symptoms listed above and you think that you are a candidate for TMJ or TMD treatment, please contact our office for a complimentary consultation.

TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorders are a family of problems related to your complex jaw joint. If you have had symptoms like pain or a “clicking” sound, you’ll be glad to know that these problems are more easily diagnosed and treated than they were in the past. These symptoms occur when the joints of the jaw and the chewing muscles (muscles of mastication) do not work together correctly. TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint, which is the name for each joint (right and left) that connects your jaw to your skull. Since some types of TMJ problems can lead to more serious conditions, early detection and treatment are important.
